New York Knicks

2 March 2011

I'm not sure if the New York Knicks have all the pieces in place right now, but by adding Carmelo Anthony they are certainly one big step closer to being a NBA championship contender. Although considering the mismanagement over the last 10 years it's heard to believe they won't mess this up too.

…and we know you don’t care.  This team is not going to trick me into watching it this year.  However, I have decided that I will check in on them, as one would check in on an ailing old friend.  They looked pretty good tonight, beating the Phoenix Suns, 126-99.  I’ll just give my critique of Gallinari’s play, since I know the Knicks arent doing anything this year, and Gallo’s one of the few players I know will be around next year.

Say Swine Flu keeps spreading. Say it gets worse, like "Outbreak" worse, and the majority of people in the US get it, including LeBron James. I still don't think I could beat him one-on-one. Even if it was first to score. Or if we played "PIG." Remember when Jordan had the flu in the '88 playoffs, and he dropped 47 against the Knicks, AT the Garden??? We spectators/bloggers/sports fans seriously over-estimate the flu. If LeBron had swine flu, not only would he stuff me like a Quizno's Torpedo, he would still be able to beat the following athletes/teams:

One day after the NBA Trade Deadline passed, many Knicks played like they had a world of pressure taken off their shoulders.  With much speculation swirling around whether or not the Knicks would deal away enigmatic guard Nate Robinson and workhorse David Lee, both were able to breath easier last night knowing that they'd be playing in New York for the remainder of the season.

Here is an excerpt from my piece on RealGM:

Okay, let's just be honest here.  Nate Robinson may not have fully deserved the 2006 NBA Slam Dunk Contest Title, but he sure earned it this year.  Nate battled the defending champion, Dwight Howard, in the Finals and one-upped the ultimate gamesman in the end.  Together they put on possibly the greatest show in the history of the contest since the days of Michael Jordan battling Dominique Wilkins.

Today, the Toronto Raptors traded Jermaine O'Neal, Jamario Moon, and a lottery-protected first round pick to the Miami Heat in exchange for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks.  On the surface this looks like a great trade for the Heat, but it can also cause potential problems for the Knicks as they do battle with the Raptors twice next week and will continue to battle them down the stretch in the Chase For The Eighth Seed.

Earlier today, the Lakers learned that starting center Andrew Bynum would be out for eight to 12 weeks with a knee injury. All Kobe did tonight was set the record for most points at Madison Square Garden with 61 points to beat the Knicks.

David Lee posted his 10th consecutive double-double Saturday night against the Indiana Pacers, with 23 points and 17 rebounds, on the way to a 122-113 victory. Lee is now tied with Dwight Howard for the lead in double-doubles with 35 this year.

The New York Knicks finally ended an eight-game losing streak to the Houston Rockets, winning 104-98 on Monday night at Madison Square Garden.

The Rockets played without Yao Ming, and the Knicks received strong bench play behind Wilson Chandler, Nate Robinson, and Tim Thomas, who all scored in double digits. Robinson led all Knicks with 19 points, while Chandler chipped in 18, and Thomas added 11.

When talking about the Knicks, the name Eddy Curry hardly comes up these days. So far this season, the man Isiah Thomas once wanted to build the Knicks around, has played in one game this season.

Despite a tough 116-110 loss in Philadelphia tonight, the New York Knicks are playing surprisingly well under their new head coach, Mike D'Antoni. The Knicks had won three in a row prior to this evening's contest, including an impressive victory over D'Antoni's old team, the immensely-talented Phoenix Suns.

In a long list of Philadelphia victories over New York, add Saturday's matchup between the Knicks and Sixers to the list. The Knicks lost to the Sixers in a close battle, 116-110 in Philadelphia.

The Stephon Marbury saga, which ranges from LA to NY, might last a little longer yet. The talk all this week was about the Olympiakos, the New York Yankees of Greece, of having an interest in the banished guard. However, that ended early Friday when Jannero Pargo became the front runner. The reason is because Pargo has more European experience. I think it's because the Olympiakos just did not want to deal with Marbury's buyout with the Knicks.

The Knicks are going to start winning again (they were slightly above .500 before dumping Randolph and Crawford), simply because of the depth they suddenly have with Gallinari.  It seems like D'Antoni can put any five out there and be effective; he can even win with a short-handed team, but at the pace the Knicks play, it has to help the whole team to have a capable bench.  Nate and Gallinari could be a deadly change of pace.

Following the trades that sent Jamal Crawford and Zach Randolph packing, for a short while, the Knicks seemed like they'd be able to survive the core-shaking changes to their roster. Al Harrington came to New York with something to prove, and he blazed through a hot streak of games about a week after joining the club.

With every pitch of last night's devastating Mets loss to the Cubs I felt the stomach acid burning holes in my belly. Ulcers were forming at an alarming rate; but I had been dealing with this my entire life and was well prepared. After all, I endured an entire decade of Knicks basketball that was more stressful than solving the American economic crisis. Charles Smith missing layup after layup against the Bulls, Patrick Ewing trying the finger roll instead of dunking, Reggie Miller taunting our fan base multiple times after raining down clutch three-pointers...and this was all when the team was good!

Stephon Marbury don't fret, you are still the Knicks most electric, talented and impactful player on the roster- and it looks like it will stay that way for at least one last season. While Chris Duhon will make for a great backup point guard for the Knickerbockers, all stock has been put in the free agent Class of 2010...and rightfully so. Duhon received a 2 year deal, as to not get in the way of the courtship of Dwayne Wade, Lebron James or Carmelo Anthony in a few years. But Duhon offers more. He's a steady point guard, who dishes the ball, protects the ball, and shoots the ball with success. That being said, he is a nice player, not a thunder stealer from Stephon Marbury, the man who knows he must resurrect his career before he hits free agency. The player who knows that if he can't succeed in the fun and gun style of Mike D'Antoni, where would he succeed? The player that knows he now must live up to the $21.8 million salary he has this year.
