Another epic New York/Boston sports collision will end with the Giants avenging the loss of their pinstriped comrades...

I was watching a sports highlights show recently, and saw Coach Tom Coughlin call his Giants the team of destiny. Huh? I thought all along it was the Patriots and their pursuit of perfection deservant of the "Team of Destiny" moniker. I rethought the situation and the words of Coughlin and came to the conclusion that he is right. The Giants are the team of destiny.

The Patriots were expected to win since every game in the regular season after their victory over the Colts. I spent the rest of the season waiting for the AFC championship game where they would to fall to Indy, but I guess the Chargers had something to say about that. So now its a different Manning that must put an end to this pursuit of perfection. Two of the Pats' closest games came when pitted against the brothers' Manning. The destiny will be fulfilled, a Manning will serve as the David to the Goliath juggernaut of New England.

I am not just hating on the Patriots (well maybe just a little-being a Yankee fan I was never a fan of the sports franchises hailing from beantown). They did finish the greatest regular season ever if one was to look at records broken or tied. But as a subscriber to NFL Sunday ticket and seeing all their games, their accomplishments seem somewhat marred. Firstly, they did it against less than stellar competition in the AFC East. Secondly, why was Tom Brady and the rest of the starters in those games so late when they had the victory at hand. I waited patiently for the football gods to pass judgement on the Patriots for turning NFL games to what I'd usually see on saturday. But nope, they live on and the Patriots machine rumbles forward knocking down everything in its path.

So now the beauty of the situation is a New York team has a chance to completely embarrass the Patriots if they pull off the upset. Anything short of a victory will be catastrophic for Belicheck and his band of merry men. He will be second guessed for every decision he made during the entire season if the Patriots fail to win. Talk about pressure to win. Now Boston fans will feel what the NY fans felt when the Yankees crumbled after having that 3-0 lead. Now their team will be the butt end of jokes and accusations of choking. And this choke will be greater than what the Yankees, because nothing will look worse than 18-1. And they'll be maybe the only team to ever achieve that record so they'll be alone in their infamy for a long time to come. And to make it even worse, it'll be capped off by images of Don Shula and Mercury Morris popping champagne bottles after their epic demise in front of a worldwide audience. Now that is what I call destiny. What is an NFL season without seeing that '72 Dolphins team popping the bubbly? I hope that tradition will live on for many years to come.

So New England, you guys are 18-0 and 1 victory away from achieving football immortality. Yes, the Yankees were 3-0 in the ALCS but they didn't have a record breaking season and weren't the unamious favorite to win it all. I have gotten over that loss in a fw months. But can you Patriots fans handle it if your beloved Pats lose. I doubt it. Come Sunday, I'll have my champagne ready to celebrate with the '72 Dolphins when the Giants beat the Pats in what would be the greatest Superbowl to date. If the Patriots do manage to win, I'll still have the champagne out and I'll hold my glass and head held high and give you guys a congratulations for a job well done and a season to remember.

  1. Regarding the "less that stellar" competition comment - sure the AFC East stinks but the Pats did beat everyone in the vaunted NFC East as well as every team that made the playoffs save Tennesee and Green Bay. The Packers would've been an interesting game but you can't say the Patriots haven't played (and beaten) the best teams in the league. Good luck Sunday.

  2. well, they played the AFC east teams twice and everybody else once. They'll be seeing the Giants for the second time this sunday so lets see what happens.
